です (desu)

です is the polite copula. It links a topic to a description — like “is / am / are” in English, but as its own word at the end of the sentence.

私は学生です。
Watashi wa gakusei desu. — “I am a student.”

これは本です。
Kore wa hon desu. — “This is a book.”

元気です。
Genki desu. — “I am fine.” / “[I] am well.”

The plain form is だ (da), used among close friends. In polite conversation, stick with です.

Negative: ではありません or じゃありません. Question: add か — 学生ですか。
