を (o / wo)

を marks the direct object — the thing that receives the action of the verb.

本を読みます。
Hon o yomimasu. — “I read a book.”

ご飯を食べます。
Gohan o tabemasu. — “I eat a meal.”

水を飲みます。
Mizu o nomimasu. — “I drink water.”

Pronounced o in modern Tokyo Japanese (historically wo).
